Digital Design Seminar 2012-2022 - digiblast.org

Weitzman School of Design - Advanced Research Studio - University of Pennsylvania Dept of Architecture
critics:    Ezio Blasetti, Danielle WIllems
teaching assistants: -

The Digiblast Workshop will outline digital modeling, representation and fabrication. The workshop operates as an introduction to the digital environment at Weitzman School of Design. The tutorials focus on delivering an
essential toolkit for the Weitzman School of Design workflows for: Explicit & Associative 3D Modeling, Drawing, Rendering & Physical Output in the DigitalFabLab. A teaching assistant will be available during designated office hours for additional technical assistance throughout the workshop. During your first year at Weitzman School of Design, students are expected to model, draw and render in a digital 3D environment. Rhino, Grasshopper, VRay, KeyShot and the Adobe Creative Suite are standard software packages used at Penn. During Digiblast students build skills that will be useful i n future design studios. Explicit and Associative 3D modeling, visualization an2D post-production presentation techniques will be covered i n daily handson tutorials and during in-class lab time with expert guidance for developing skills. These tutorials look at 3D modeling both as descriptive geometric representations and as data visualizations through a series of ‘canonical’ architectural projects.

This 10 day workshop will lay the foundations for a range of computer skills that are essential for navigating the digital workflow of Weitzman School of Design graduate studios . Being equipped with a comprehensive understanding of the capacity that digital media has to conceptualize , organize and manage complex forms will enable one to work rigorously and precisely through idea exploration , design development and ultimately meaningful representation . Digital techniques , when used with strategic intention, become important tools for designers in form generation and idea refinement. Students learn how to use these programs , as well as good organizational practices for modeling , making drawings and post -production.
